My View about Teacher and Teaching by Quotes

“Most teachers have little control over school policy or curriculum or choice of texts or special placement of students, but most have a great deal of autonomy inside the classroom. To a degree shared by only a few other occupations, such as police work, public education rests precariously on the skill and virtue of the people at the bottom of the institutional pyramid.” said Tracy Kidder
We also made fun of the teacher’s physical imperfection, “A cross-eyed teacher can keep twice the number of children in order than any other, because the pupils do not know who she's looking at”. Quoted from Four Hundred Laughs: Or, Fun Without Vulgarity, compiled and edited by John R. Kemble, 1902, but
Why Do Teachers Teach?
Teaching is not a profession, it is a vocation. Teachers teach because “Teaching is leaving a vestige of one self in the development of another. And surely the student is a bank where you can deposit your most precious treasures”, said Eugene P. Bertin.
In addition, Henry Brooks Adams said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”
Jacques Barzun said, even “In teaching you cannot see the fruit of a day's work. It is invisible and remains so, maybe for twenty years.”
The benefit of teaching is, “To teach is to learn twice”, said Joseph Joubert, Pensées, 1842.
John Cotton Dana said, “Who dares to teach must never cease to learn”.
Talmud said, “When you teach your son, you teach your son's son”.
However, Abraham Lincoln said it best. Teachers teach because we “Teach the children so that it will not be necessary to teach the adults.”
Who Are the Best Teachers?
“The best teacher is the one who suggests rather than dogmatizes, and inspires his listener with the wish to teach himself”, said Edward Bulwer-Lytton.
“The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind”, said Kahlil Gibran.
Dan Rather said, “The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth”.
“The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book.” Author Unknown
However, Dao Hoa said, “The wise teacher should be full of ideas and stuffed with facts”. " Caring teachers should reside in the district they teach so they can experience and understand the culture and environment of the students they serve."
“The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-distrust. He guides their eyes from himself to the spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple”, said Amos Bronson Alcott.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” said William Arthur Ward.
“Teachers who inspire realize there will always be rocks in the road ahead of us. They will be stumbling blocks or stepping stones; it all depends on how we use them.” Author Unknown
“Teachers who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating a garden, and those who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather flowers.” Author Unknown
Robert Brault, “The average teacher explains complexity; the gifted teacher reveals simplicity.” at www.robertbrault.com
Ever Garrison knew that, “A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils”.
Carl Jung said, “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”
The most important of all, according to Karl Menninger, “What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.”

I have worked as a teaching assistant for 20 years here in England and I'm afraid to say that inspirational teachers are few and far between. I think the wrong people are attracted to teaching because of the pay. It's very sad
I am not only now following your hub, I will be forwarding your hub link (don't know if that's the correct jargon - I'm new to this) to my daughter as well. She came home in Grade Two and announced that "somebody has to do something about the way children are been treated and taught!" She is now a teacher and is less than a month away from completing her Masters in Education. I have appreciated those who have taught my children over the years having found the majority of them to be sincere, committed and dedicated people. My gratitude for those teachers who have had a positive influence in the lives of my children has deepened substantially since viewing the profession through my daughter's eyes. I look forward to reading each and every one of your hubs! Thank YOU!
Inspiring teachers are hard to come by. I think that many do start out with the right intentions but end up losing faith in/because of the "system".
Thanks enjoyed reading.
Teaching is a calling.
Nice collection of quotes. I like Joseph Joubert and John Cotton Dana's quotes best. Unfortunately, teaching as a profession is very underestimated. Therefore, I'd like to add one of my favorite "teaching quotes":
"Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions." ~Author Unknown
A lot depends upon students back-ground and culture.
There are two scenarios: One: a country where degree is a must for a reasonable earnings and also where money can buy a degree. On the other extreme: Only merit counts and parents are not expected to spend their life-time savings on education of their children.
A teacher can be effective in the second scenario. A quote, "If a students does not know, a teacher has not taught" would be applicable only in this case and not in the first scenario where more applicable is "You can take a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink"

I will share this hub to my friend who is a private school teacher. I believe that teaching is not just a profession but a vocation. You have shared beautiful quotes to ponder on.
Have a great week!
